Make your space appear larger!

Living in a small home or a small space doesn't have to appear that way!  Here are a few tricks you can use to make your space appear larger.

Clearing out clutter should be the beginning.  Open your space by placing furniture that gives you easy access to the room. Try and place larger pieces of furniture against a wall rather in the centre of the room.  The more floor you can see the larger the room will look.

Lighting is also important.  Add more lamps to your room to bring in light.  Also, heavy draperies will cut light down so you may want to avoid these.  Many people are now opting to put only blinds in their windows rather than both blinds and draperies.  This will take away the heaviness in the room and will give it a clean, fresh look.

Mirrors are great as they reflect both natural and artificial light.  A mirror will make a room brighter both day and night. This is especially effective if you place the mirror by a window so the outdoors can be reflected into your home.

When using paint, a dark color make feel cozy but it actually absorbs light and will make your room seem smaller. By using lighter colors on your wall it will reflect the light making the room appear larger.  You can then add darker furniture for a contrasting color.

By using some of these tips you can fool the eye into believing that the room is larger than it actually is.
